01/13/2005: "Perl/MysQL Design Tools"

With my recent work in Perl and MySQL, I thought I'd share some of my favorite tools with all of you. I try to do my development work in a manner that allows for portability between different environments, but most of my work (out of necessity) is still done in Windows. My favorite flavor of Perl is ActivePerl. One wonderful feature of this tool is the Perl Package Manager (PPM). PPM is included with every ActivePerl release. It is a tool that allows you to install, remove, upgrade, and otherwise manage the use of common Perl CPAN modules (like Tk and DBI) with ActivePerl.

I've been around the computer world since way before we had GUI interfaces, so I'm quite comfortable with the command line interface for most products, but there are just times where a GUI is nice to have. For MySQL, I use MySQL-Front. This is a great MySQL interface, and I highly recommend it to anyone doing development on any Windows platform.

While there are many Perl IDEs, my personal favorite is Open Perl IDE. Open Perl IDE is an integrated development environment for writing and debugging Perl scripts with any standard perl distribution under Windows 95/98/NT/2000. Check it out... you won't be disappointed.

Finally, as I've started working on my Perl sniffer i wanted a way to graphically represent my table structures. I recently came across DDT - Database Design Tool. This is a very simply tool, but I'm hoping the author continues to expand on it.

I'm always open to your input and suggestions. If you have a favorite tool that I've overlooked, please let me know.
